How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Public records

Open Perth and Peel businesses with Google reviews.

  2. 2

    Pool work only

Businesses that work on swimming pools stay in.

  3. 3

    Their own words

Services are taken from each business's own website.

  4. 4

    Builders first

New pool builders lead each suburb, specialists follow.

Every business on Outdoor Living WA started as a public business record for Perth and Peel. We kept the ones that are open, have Google reviews and work on swimming pools, and left out those that only touch pools in passing.

For each business we read its own website and noted the services it describes: new pools, concrete or fibreglass, spas, renovations, fencing, heating, cleaning, removal, warranties and finance. When a business says nothing about a service, the page says we have no information yet rather than guessing.

Builders who construct new pools are shown first in each suburb. Pool shops, cleaners, resurfacers and other specialists follow, so you can find the right business for the job.

Owners can claim their listing to fix details, and anyone can ask us to correct or remove a page.

How to choose a pool contractor in Western Australia

Start with the kind of pool you want, because Perth's pool trade splits by material. Fibreglass pools are made in a factory and installed as a single shell, and the big makers run display centres in Joondalup, O'Connor, Greenwood, Rockingham, Port Kennedy and Mandurah where you can walk around full size pools. Concrete pools are formed on site to any shape, which suits a sloping block, a narrow courtyard or a design with a spa, ledge or glass wall. Vinyl liner pools sit between the two and can also be used to renew an old pool. Each listing shows which of these a business works with, so you can shortlist by material before you call.

Next, check the rules that apply to every pool in WA. A building permit from your local government is needed before a pool, spa or safety barrier is built, and your contractor usually lodges it. Any pool or spa holding more than 30 cm of water needs a compliant safety barrier, built to Australian Standard 1926.1, and your council will inspect that barrier at least every four years. Plan the fence with the pool, not after it. Before anyone digs, a Before You Dig Australia enquiry is free and shows where underground services run.

Two WA rules surprise many buyers. A swimming pool built on its own does not need home indemnity insurance, even over $20,000, and pool construction is exempt from the builder registration that applies to most building work over that amount. So ask each contractor what protects you if the job goes wrong: a written contract, the warranty on the shell and the workmanship, and any industry membership or completion guarantee they hold. Several businesses here describe lifetime structural warranties on fibreglass shells or fixed term warranties on resurfacing work, and those details are on each listing.

Read ratings with their review counts. A 5.0 from 3 reviews tells you less than a 4.4 from 200, and a handful of one-star reviews among hundreds is normal for a busy builder. Open the reviews themselves and look for comments about communication, cleanup and how problems after handover were handled.

Think about the whole life of the pool. Perth summers are long and dry, with Perth Metro averaging January and February maximums above 31°C, so many owners add heating to stretch the season into autumn and spring. Ask whether the builder installs solar, heat pump or gas heating, or whether you will need a heating specialist. Find a service business near you before handover: weekly or monthly cleaning, water testing and equipment repairs are offered by pool shops in most suburbs on this site.

On the first call, ask what is included in the quote (excavation, fencing, paving, heating and equipment), who lodges the permit, how long the warranty runs and what it covers, and whether you can see a finished pool or speak to a recent customer. Get at least two written quotes for the same scope so you can compare like with like.

If you already own a pool, the same approach applies to renovation. Resurfacing, re-tiling, leak repairs and liner conversions are specialist trades, and several businesses here do nothing else. A pool that is no longer wanted can be removed and the ground compacted, and removal businesses are listed too.

Frequently asked questions

How are pool contractors chosen for this directory?

Every business comes from public business records for Perth and Peel. We keep businesses that are open, have Google reviews and work on swimming pools, from builders to pool shops and service technicians. Owners can claim their page to correct details or add photos.

Does a new pool need a building permit in WA?

Yes. Local governments in WA require a building permit before a swimming pool, spa or safety barrier is built. Your pool contractor usually lodges the application, so ask who handles it when you compare quotes.

What are the pool fencing rules in WA?

Any private pool, spa or portable pool holding more than 30 cm of water needs a compliant safety barrier, and local governments inspect private pool barriers at least every four years.

Do businesses pay to be listed?

No. A basic listing is free and stays free. Businesses can pay for a featured position or a premium listing, and those are marked as such.
